Do you like birds? At The Living Energy, you’ll meet more feathered characters than at a West End musical! Lower Cwmcadarn Farm is positively bustling with avian activity. We host four lively families of house martins, professional commuters who jet off to Africa annually, only to return with impeccable punctuality to the eaves of Cadarn Cottage. Our sparrows are serial nesters, packing every nook and cranny of Spring Barn, clearly ignoring all advice about overcrowding.
Keep an eye out for the local hawk, who hovers dramatically like he’s auditioning for a nature documentary, and swallows who swoop in for the aerial acrobatics. If you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending on your sleep schedule), you’ll hear our resident owl hooting at night, offering unsolicited commentary on your holiday snoring.
Unlike the seaside, we’re not overrun with pigeons, but there is a couple nesting in the Living Energy Barn who are early risers who think everyone should enjoy their dawn cooing. The bird show is especially spectacular for morning people, with chicks being fed and parents showing off their insect catching skills. Book your stay: it’s the only place where the tweets are real!
RED KITES
We haven’t got any red kites soaring overhead here, sorry to disappoint our bird bingo enthusiasts! But don’t worry, your feathered fix is only a 30-mile jaunt away at the Llanddeusant Red Kite Feeding Station. Opened in 2002 with a little help from the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Welsh Red Kite Trust, this hotspot has become the red kite equivalent of a five-star buffet. Pull up a seat in the specially built hide and watch these magnificent birds perform daring mid-air stunts, swooping and squabbling over their dinner just a few feet away. It’s a unique spectacle that runs all year round—nature’s own dinner show, and you don’t even need to book a table!
