What exactly do we mean by ‘fair weather’ in Wales? In theory, it’s when it’s not raining, but we’d advise always keeping your umbrella and waterproofs at arm’s length, just in case the weather decides to perform one of its legendary U-turns. The golden rule is: if it’s dry, it’ll soon be wet; if it’s wet, don’t worry, it’ll get dry. The timing, however, remains one of life’s great mysteries. Our best advice? Be prepared for anything, whether the sky is a lovely shade of blue or looking a bit brooding and moody. Top tip: download the Met Office App and have a play with the precipitation map. It’s surprisingly accurate and may just help you plan your day – or at least provide a good laugh as you watch the rain clouds chase you across Wales!

OK, it seems to have been raining for days on end. Honestly, if our summer managed more than one consecutive hour of sunshine, it would probably make the front page of the papers, or even a weather warning. Around here, when we say it’s an unlucky day if it rains from dawn till dusk, what we really mean is, welcome to the club! More often than not, we get the full British medley: gentle drizzle that soaks you to the bone, cheeky showers that sneak up while you’re popping out, and the occasional biblical downpour just to keep things interesting. Looking back, 2022 and 2025 were practically Saharan, 2023 was just your standard washout, and 2024, well, best not to mention it. With climate change, who knows what’s next, suncream in December or snow in July?

But when the weather refuses to play ball and your wellies are still soggy from yesterday, there’s always a tried-and-tested British fallback: shopping! We’re only 50 minutes from Hereford, which is stocked with all the usual shops and some cracking eateries for a spot of lunch, or you can head down to Cardiff for retail therapy with extra pizzazz. Just don’t forget your brolly, you never know!
